Adopting a high-fiber diet helps prevent conditions such as hemorrhoids, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, constipation, colon polyps, high cholesterol and colon cancer.

More intake of high fiber food along with plenty of water will keep your stools softer and will lower the pressure inside the colon; thus, the bowel contents can move all the way through easily. Eating 20-35 grams of fiber and drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day is recommended although most Americans eat only about 5-20 grams of fiber a day. Fiber is good but if your intake exceeds 35 grams a day, it may cause discomfort due to excess bowel gas. Nowadays, there are tables available that shows how much fiber you get in a certain type of foods. Check out the one below.

Some doctors suggest taking fiber products such as Konsyl, Citrucel, or Metamucil every day. These products provide 2 to 3.5 grams of fiber per tablespoon after mixing it with 8 ounces of water.
